Unleashing Potential In Our Community

Deaf Education

Deaf & Hard of Hearing Education

Cayuga Onondaga BOCES provides comprehensive educational support for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students across our component districts. Our certified D/HH teachers offer direct instructional services to students tailored to their individual needs, as determined by assessments and the Committee on Special Education. Services are available for students K–22 and may include auditory-verbal, sign language, or combined communication approaches.

In addition to direct student instruction, our D/HH teachers provide consultant services to school districts, including guidance on classroom accommodations, individualized program planning, staff training, and strategies to support communication and learning for D/HH students. TOD/HH teachers also serve as liaisons among schools, audiologists, and parents. This integrated approach ensures that students receive the support they need both academically and socially, while districts are empowered with the expertise to create inclusive learning environments.

The goal of Deaf & Hard of Hearing Education is to develop students’ skills so they can achieve independent success in the classroom, at home, and later in the workplace. Instruction emphasizes the development of receptive and expressive communication skills (using sign language and/or auditory-verbal skills), self-advocacy, and strategies for communication repair.

Through this integrated approach, students receive both individualized support and the opportunity to thrive within inclusive educational settings, while districts benefit from expert guidance and consultation.
