Today's Spotlight: Criminal Justice

What does a career in criminal justice look like? Students in the Career Connections Criminal Justice summer camp had the opportunity to find out through engaging activities that introduced them to careers in law enforcement, forensic science, and the legal system.

Led by instructor Stacey Jones, campers explored the many facets of criminal justice while participating in interactive experiences that encouraged critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Students learned about policing, the court system, and the important role forensic science plays in criminal investigations.

Hands-on activities included crime scene investigations, evidence collection, and mock trial exercises that gave campers a firsthand look at investigative procedures and the legal process. These experiences helped students develop a greater appreciation for the knowledge, skills, and professionalism required of those working in public safety and the justice system.

Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to learn directly from local law enforcement professionals. Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck visited with campers to share insights into his career, discuss the responsibilities of serving the community, and answer questions about careers in public safety. Students also welcomed members of the Auburn Police Department, including the Emergency Response Team and Drone Unit, who demonstrated specialized equipment, explained their roles within the department, and provided a closer look at the teamwork and technology used in modern law enforcement. These experiences gave campers valuable insight into the many career opportunities available within the criminal justice field.

The Criminal Justice summer camp introduces students to the Criminal Justice program at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Career & Technical Education (CTE). Students entering their junior or senior year of high school can continue developing their knowledge and skills through hands-on learning while exploring careers in law enforcement, forensic science, corrections, emergency services, and the legal field.
