Work-Based Learning Works: GDNM Seniors Build Career Skills Through Auburn Public Theater

A partnership between Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES and Auburn Public Theater (APT) is giving two Graphic Design and New Media seniors valuable experience in marketing and design. Sierra Crytzer-Shurant and Toby Diaz are gaining hands-on opportunities in the field they hope to pursue.
Located in downtown Auburn, the Auburn Public Theater seeks to bring people together through affordable access to live performance, cinema, arts education and community events. Dominic Gambaiani, Executive Assistant/SCR Coordinator, and Teddy Brill, Marketing/Technical Coordinator, mentored the seniors and praised their progress.
“It’s been nice to have some help with the day-to-day activities of APT,” said Gambaiani. “It has gotten new eyes into the building and it’s really nice to have a younger perspective on marketing materials.”
Throughout their time at APT, Crytzer-Shurant and Diaz have demonstrated flexibility and a willingness to help wherever needed. One moment that stands out came during a busy event, when the interns stepped in to sell raffle tickets during a last-minute crunch situation. According to APT staff, their support was pivotal to the event’s success.
For the students, the experience has provided a balance between strengthening their design skills and preparing for life after graduation in a real-world environment.
“I’ve learned more about Canva and how to make posters, napkin holders, Instagram posts, and more,” said Crytzer-Shurant. “The internship has helped me grow by getting me out of my comfort zone to work in a business environment and learn how to get things done a lot quicker than I do in class.”
“I’m learning how to make effective and professional advertisements and posts in Canva,” added Diaz. “It’s helping me become more skilled in what I plan to go to college for, before I’m even there.”
Both APT staff and the students say that the internship has been beneficial. APT has gained additional support with marketing efforts, while the interns have had the chance to learn about professional expectations and industry practices. For Crytzer-Shurant and Diaz, who both plan to pursue careers in graphic design, the opportunity has reinforced their career goals.
“I will now be even more experienced with another design program, and it’s helped me know that graphic design is the field I want to be in,” said Crytzer-Shurant.
Graphic Design and New Media teacher Terry Cuddy is pleased to see the students grow through the experience. He described APT as a “great resource for our community” and believes the internship will give Crytzer-Shurant and Diaz the confidence to take on new challenges in the future.
