Beyond the Classroom: Lacie Grant

First-year Community Experience Program student Lacie Grant is gaining practical experience through skill-building opportunities that are helping prepare her for future endeavors.
Grant currently participates in a work-based learning placement at Westminster Manor in Auburn, a senior living community that emphasizes both independence and connection among its residents. There, she assists staff with daily tasks that help keep the dining area organized and welcoming.
“I help set tables, make fruit cups, and sweep,” Grant said.
Working in this professional environment has allowed Grant to learn new skills while finding comfort in a calm and supportive setting.
“I like how it is quiet here, there is not a lot of pressure,” she said.
Westminster Manor’s Programming and Activities Director, Kathe Catto, said residents enjoy a wide range of daily activities and meals prepared on-site.
“We get many compliments on the food,” she said.
Catto has also seen Grant grow more comfortable and confident during her time at the facility.
“I feel that Lacie has come out of her shell,” she said.
That growth has also been noticed by those who support Grant day-to-day. Nancy Stoneburg, Teacher Aide at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, said the work placement has helped open the door to new possibilities.
“Lacie has opened up a lot in her time here,” Stoneburg said. “We have discussed all the possibilities that this training is going to provide for her.”
Grant also works closely with Westminster Manor staff member Jamie Mansell, who said Grant’s positive outlook has made an impression on the team.
“Lacie has a great attitude, she really wants to learn,” Mansell said. “She is really awesome, always happy to be here.”
As she continues gaining experience, Grant said the opportunity has helped her feel more prepared for what comes next. She hopes to build on those skills and take the next step toward employment this summer.
