Career Chronicles: Karen Kline

Karen Kline has spent the past 25 years supporting students as a teacher aide with Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES. Throughout her career, Kline has worked in school districts such as Port Byron, Weedsport, Auburn, Skaneateles and now Cato-Meridian, primarily supporting middle school students.
Kline’s journey into education began through a deeply personal experience. After the loss of her daughter, who had learning disabilities herself, Kline began volunteering in her daughter’s classroom. That experience helped shape her future career.
“My daughter led me down this pathway,” Kline said. “After she passed away, I volunteered in her classroom and realized how much I could help.”
Throughout her career, Kline has been influenced by mentors who helped her grow in the role. One person who stands out is Maria Myhill, a teacher she worked closely with.
“She taught me so much,” Kline said. “She has a way with kids, and I really look up to her.”
Over the years, many student moments have left a lasting impression, but one experience continues to stand out. While working in Port Byron, Kline supported a student who struggled with motivation and confidence.
“I always said, ‘I know you can do it,’” Kline said.
Years later, that encouragement came full circle when the former student recognized Kline at the state fair.
“She recognized me,” Kline said. “She was in her 20s, in a nursing program and working at the hospital. Seeing her grow into a successful woman made me feel so good.”
Outside of school, Kline enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is also actively involved in the Donor Family Network Inc., Team Finger Lakes, a support group for organ donation that she co-manages with a friend.
“We run fundraising events all year long so we can attend the Transplant Games,” Kline said.
The Transplant Games of America are held every two years, with the next event taking place in Denver in June.
After more than two decades in education, Kline continues to support students with encouragement, and a deep understanding of the impact one caring adult can make.
