Career Chronicles: Zachary Tamburrino

For 20 years, Zachary Tamburrino has been a familiar and dependable presence at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES. As a cleaner on campus, he has literally watched the organization grow around him.
“I still remember when this building was being built,” Tamburrino said.
His connection to BOCES goes back even further. As a student, he attended classes at the former campus and studied culinary arts. Years later, a family connection helped open the door to a career.
“My father’s friend’s wife worked at BOCES. She was the head secretary a long time ago,” he said. “There was an opening and I sent in my resume. I ended up getting the job. I have been here through three bosses, two buildings and many years.”
Tamburrino’s responsibilities vary from day to day, keeping his work interesting.
“My duties depend on the day. There are busy, chaotic days and there are slower days,” he said. “I mostly do set-ups. I also do laundry, take care of the cafeteria, just any odds and ends that need to get done.”
One moment stands out as especially meaningful in his career.
“My favorite memory from working here is getting moved to first shift,” Tamburrino said. “I got my confidence back. My boss believed that I was capable of the job. BOCES recognized my work and it felt great.”
He also takes pride in supporting others.
“I look back fondly on the time when I helped my fellow cleaner, Jade,” he said. “I worked with her, showed her the ropes, and gave her guidance. She’s still working here and I am proud of her.”
Outside of work, Tamburrino stays busy with a second part-time job at the Cayuga County Courthouse. When he does get downtime, he prefers to keep things simple.
“When I am not working, I enjoy sleeping and taking it easy,” he said. “On the weekends I will occasionally go to a brewery.”
Born and raised in Auburn, New York, Tamburrino is proud to be part of the local community he has served for decades.
