Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Welcomes Aileen Szymaniak as New Assistive Technology Specialist

Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES is pleased to announce the appointment of Aileen Szymaniak as its new Assistive Technology Specialist serving both the Special Education and Instructional Support Services departments. In her role, Szymaniak will support students and staff by evaluating and implementing technology to enhance learning and accessibility.
Szymaniak brings nearly 20 years of experience as a speech-language pathologist, having worked in both private and public school settings in New York. She joined Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES last year as an instructional coach for special education before stepping into her current position following a retirement in the department.
“I work with any assistive technology needs that our districts might require, whether it’s completing a full evaluation, providing support, or recommending programs or subscriptions to help students access their curriculum,” Szymaniak said.
Her professional journey has been guided by a desire to expand her skills beyond speech-language pathology. “Part of the reason I transitioned into this role was to gain experience outside of my original field and become a stronger educational leader,” she said.
In her new position, Szymaniak aims to broaden the scope of assistive technology services offered to districts. “I want to provide consultations, training, and support, as well as explore proactive ways to assist students before they require special education identification,” she explained.
Szymaniak also values the balance her role offers between working directly with students and collaborating with staff. “What I enjoy most is getting to work closely with both students and staff. I really love working with kids, and this role allows me to reconnect with them while also supporting the teachers,” she said.
Outside of her professional life, Szymaniak enjoys staying active, spending time on the water, and traveling with her four children. She recently explored France and Spain and looks forward to new adventures with her family.
