Beyond the Classroom: Jacob Ukolowicz

A partnership between Catscootz 3D Prints & Novelties and the Community Experience Program (CEP) is providing student Jacob Ukolowicz with meaningful opportunities to learn new skills, build confidence and contribute to local business.
“I do like to clean. I vacuum, take out the trash and cardboard and sweep,” said Ukolowicz. “I like to make the whole place nice and clean.”
When asked about his experience with new technology, Ukolowicz said, “We sometimes do things with the 3D printer.” He added that, “I do feel confident. I talk to people that come in.”
Looking toward the future, Ukolowicz stated he is not yet sure, but is looking to work after graduating in the Spring.
Christian Walters, owner at Catscootz 3D Prints & Novelties, said the experience has been rewarding for both sides. “With Jacob on the team, not only do I get more time to design, but he brings such a great attitude. The fact that he's always excited to come in lifts my mood too.” Walters said.
“He enjoys playing with the cars, but when it comes to work, he always jumps on the opportunity to help.” he said. When asked about Jacob’s growth, Walters added that his confidence has matured greatly during his time there.
Scott Caruana, teaching assistant at BOCES, has also seen growth through Jacob’s work in the program. “He’s done a really good job. When people come in, he will be the first to talk to them. If he sees someone looking at the cars, he talks about the makes and models with them. He gets along great with people.” Caruana said.
Caruana also reflected on the value of the CEP program for students and local employers. “I think it is incredibly valuable. These students are learning skills and growing their resumés for once they graduate. They can transfer those skills into several other areas of employment and lead independent lives.”
Catscootz 3D Prints & Novelties feature remote controlled cars, a drift track and a wide selection of novelties, offering students the chance to work in a hands-on, engaging and community-centered environment.
