• Commercial Driving

    The Commercial Driving Program is designed to provide adults in our community with an opportunity to qualify for a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The theory, range & public road curriculums meet the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Entry-Level Driver Training regulations. The program provides ongoing enrollment with a flexible schedule.

    Enrollment

    Step 1: CDL Theory - $220

    • Online self-paced curriculum
    • Curriculum Modules:
      • CDL Class A – 48 Required Modules
      • CDL Class B – 46 Required Modules
      • CDL Class B to CDL Class A Upgrade – 40 Required Modules
    • To demonstrate proficiency, students must earn a score of at least 80% on each Module Assessment – If a student does not achieve 80% the first time they take the assessment, they can retake the assessment.
    • Must complete within 90 days from start date.
    • Permit not required to enroll in this component, but a copy of your New York State driver's license is required.
    • Need to complete the intake forms to enroll – must have email address included.
    • Students will need access to a computer to complete the theory component. Arrangements can be made if a student does not have own computer access.
    • If students find themselves having difficulty with the theory component modules, please reach out to The Center for Learning, so arrangements can be made for putting appropriate support in place. 

    Step 2: Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) Range and Road - up to 60 Hours - $3,900

    • Includes: pre-trip, shifting, maneuverability, evaluation of skills & on the road driving and road test preparation.
    • New students may start each month.

    Prerequisites: 

    • Must have CDL learner's permit to enroll in this component.
    • Must have successfully completed all required theory modules and score at least 80% on each module.
    • Must sign Self-Certification for DOT regulations.

    • Upon demonstration of mastery of skills of the behind-the-wheel, range and behind-the-wheel, a student's training certificate will be submitted to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Registry so that the student is eligible for taking the DMV Scheduled Road Test.
    • Note: If a student requires more than 60 hours to demonstrate mastery of skills for behind-the-wheel components, additional training hours may be purchased in a package of 10 for $650.

    Program Requirements

    • All Training (Theory, BTW: Range, BTW: Road) must be completed within one year of each other.
    • CDL Class A – must be 21 years or older
    • CDL Class B – must be 18 years or older
    • Valid New York State Driver’s License
    • CDL Class A or Class B Learner’s Permit
    • CDL-B to CDL-A Upgrade: Students must have current CDL-B License with Manual Transmission Driving Experience and CDL-A Learner’s Permit

     Refresher Course

    Do you already have your CDL-B or CDL-A License and need a refresher? We will customize a refresher course for you. Let us know how many hours you need and we will customize to your needs. Will need a valid copy of CDL License to enroll.

    • 2012 International Single Axle Daycab – 10-speed

    • 2017 International Prostar Single Axle - automatic transmission
    • 2013 International Roll Back – 6-speed

    • 2007 International Dump Truck – 13-speed


    Additional Information

    • Scheduled times for Range and Public Road are arranged by the instructor with students and are made available days, nights, weekends to fit any schedule.

    • Class size is limited for this program.

    • Permit, Road Test, & License Fees are additional expenses with NYS DMV.

    • Refund Information:

      • There is no refund allowed for the Theory Fee.
      • BTW: Range and Road refund requests made prior to the first day of class will be 100%.

      • Any refund request after a student starts but does not complete BTW: Range and Road hours will involve a calculation of the hours completed by the student at a rate of $200 per hour instead of a package deal rate and any difference will be refunded.
      • Refunds will not be considered if it has been longer than 6 months since the original enrollment date.
