AP ART HISTORY (1 credit)
Grades: 12
The AP Art History course is a yearlong survey of art and architecture across centuries, cultures, and styles. In this course students will cover art and architecture created from the Ancient World to the 20th Century and beyond.
They will develop an appreciation and understanding of art and architecture using these seven key concepts: Identification and Attribution, Visual Analysis, Contextual Analysis, Finding Meaning, Interdisciplinary Awareness, Reading Skills, and Writing Skills. By using these concepts, students will be able to identify works of art, artists, and styles.
AP Exam: Exam fees are to be paid by the student. The individual school district orders the exam on behalf of the student and administers it.
ART APPRECIATION (.5 credit)
Grades: 9-12
What makes an artwork a masterpiece? Why do artists create art? What is the difference between Rococo and Art Nouveau? In this course, students will discover the answers to these questions and more. We examine the elements of art and principles of design, and explore how artists have used these elements and principles in the creation of art for centuries.

ART HISTORY (.5 credit)

This Art History course integrates the four components of art study: art production, historical and cultural context, critical process and aesthetic process. Students will be able to identify and describe art from prehistoric times to modern time. Throughout this course, students will discuss various artworks, research artists, and create documents and presentations demonstrating concepts learned.

- Viewing and creating works of art involves a deliberate process of making decisions and judgments.
- Art and architecture were influenced by emerging cultures and significant, and lasting artistic contributions have been made by the major civilizations.
- The rise of Christianity influenced art and artists in the period between the Roman Empire and the Renaissance.
- Significant changes in art techniques and purpose emerge during the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo periods.
- Although art during the modern era is diverse and different from most earlier styles, modern artists are still influenced by art from the past.
ART IN WORLD CULTURE (.5 credit)
Grades: 9-12
Who is the greatest artist of all time? Is it Leonardo daVinci? Claude Monet? Michelangelo? Pablo Picasso? Is the greatest artist of all time someone whose name has been lost to history? You will learn about some of the greatest artists while also creating art of your own, including digital art. We will explore the basic principles and elements of art, learn how to critique art, and examine some of the traditional art of the Americas, Africa, and Oceania in addition to the development of Western art.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY (.5 credit)

Have you ever wondered how photographers take such great pictures? Have you tried to take photographs and wondered why they didn’t seem to capture that moment that you saw with your eyes? The Digital Photography I course focuses on the basics of photography, including building an understanding of aperture, shutter speed, lighting, and composition. Students will be introduced to the history of photography and basic camera functions. Students will use the basic techniques of composition and camera functions to build a portfolio of images, capturing people, landscapes, close-up, and action photographs.
Required Materials: digital camera of 2 megapixels or more with a minimum 3x zoom lens. Digital zooms are permitted but not recommended. Download free Gimp software. Various props for staging photographs. Student must have access to a computer in order to download the photo editing software.
AP MUSIC THEORY (1 credit)
Grades: 11-12
The Music Theory course is the study of melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, form, musical analysis, elementary composition and, to some extent, history and style. Skills in musical dictation and listening, sight-singing, and basic keyboard harmony are an important part of the AP theory course.
AP Exam: Exam fees are to be paid by the student or by school district. The individual school district orders the exam on behalf of the student and administers it.
Prerequisite: Students should have a minimum of three years of past musical study, (piano, instrumental, vocal or composition) and an ability to identify note names, perform basic rhythmic figures and identify keys.
MUSIC APPRECIATION (.5 credit)

Have you ever heard a piece of music that made you want to get up and dance? Cry your heart out? Sing at the top of your lungs? Whether pop, classical, or anything in between, music provides a powerful way for people to celebrate their humanity and connect with something larger than themselves. Music Appreciation: The Enjoyment of Listening not only will provide a historical perspective on music from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, but it will also teach you the essentials of how to listen and really hear (with a knowledgeable ear) the different music that’s all around you. Learning how to truly appreciate sound and melody is the best way to ensure a continued love of this delightful art form.
