Work-Based Learning Works: Nicholas Anthony

Nicholas Anthony, a senior at Union Springs Central School District and Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, is learning from experienced technicians while showcasing his skills at his paid internship at Saxton Electric, Inc. The company, based in Union Springs, specializes in electric services, new house wiring, barn wiring, electrical repairs and electrical renovations in and around Cayuga County.

For the past two years, Saxton Electric has provided paid work-based learning opportunities for BOCES students. Anthony began with the company in November and has already made a positive impression on Saxton management.

“Nick is a quick learner and is not afraid to get his hands dirty,” said Dan Saxton. “He came to us with a well-rounded basic education of electricity and a mechanical work ethic. If Nick continues to work hard and further his education, he will be an asset in his future endeavors.”

Anthony says his experience at Saxton Electric has reinforced his desire to pursue a career in the electrical field. He recommended that other students participate in an internship because it offers a chance to learn from multiple people.

“I’ve learned many new things since I started… Seeing the more experienced guys do tricks to solve things will definitely stick with me the most. Being able to actually work now is great.”

For Saxton Electric, internships are a great way to introduce the trade industry to the next generation. The company hopes to shrink the skills gap in the field by working with more students like Anthony in the future.
