Celebrating 24 Years: Jim Keegan's Journey with Compass

For over two decades, Jim Keegan has been a cornerstone of the Compass Program, dedicating 24 years to teaching social studies to 7th through 12th graders. His passion for alternative education has only grown stronger with time, making a lasting impact on students who benefit from a more tailored learning environment.

"I have loved it ever since I started," Keegan said. His enthusiasm for his work is evident in his dedication to understanding and supporting each student, noting that every kid is different.

“Each one has their unique reasons for being in the program. But often we are very successful in helping them turn things around," Keegan said.

Keegan credits his coworkers for the increase in achievement with the Compass students. The approach of the Compass staff is incredibly caring and cohesive as they work together for student success.

This dedication to student well-being is bolstered by a system of positive incentives, helping to motivate students.

Over the years, Keegan has built a strong relationship with Syracuse Stage, providing students with opportunities to attend plays. This year, they are bringing up to 27 students to every play.

"For many of them, it's an experience they wouldn't get otherwise," Keegan said.

These outings are made possible through the support of Mr. Yakawiak and the administration, who are committed to creating opportunities for students that extend beyond the classroom.

Outside of his teaching role, Jim is married, and he and his wife have two daughters, both of whom are currently in college. Jim serves as the president of the New York State Ice Hockey Officials Association, a position that highlights his passion for sports and community involvement. He also enjoys refereeing high school hockey games and spending time thrifting, a hobby he finds both fun and rewarding.

Keegan commented that he would not have chosen any other career.

"I love alternative education. I love dealing with challenging behaviors and working with kids to get them on the right track," Keegan said.
