Career Chronicles: Nancy Cheney

After more than two decades of working within the Special Education Department at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, Teacher Assistant Nancy Cheney said she enjoys every day as if it was her first day on the job. She is so glad she chose this career in education, as it has been a wonderful and rewarding place to work.

Starting as an aide in the 8:1 program 25 years ago, Cheney has spent the last seven years as a Teaching Assistant in the Day Treatment Program on the main campus. Through those 25 years, Cheney said she has developed a true passion for her career.

“I really enjoy my job. I enjoy the people I work with, and I enjoy working with the students within our programs. Every day is a new adventure, no day is ever the same, each day is always new and different,” she said. “It’s just so enjoyable to be here.”

Cheney described her co-workers as her “extended family,” and noted that she has received so much support from her colleagues throughout the years and that she has always been there for them. She shared, “Anyone that knows me will say I am known for my hugs. I will notice someone having a difficult day and ask do you need a hug?”

“I work with the most amazing individuals, so talented and knowledgeable in their jobs. I have always been blessed to work with a great team,” she said. “And the teachers and administration I work under, I never have considered them as bosses. They are leaders that lead by example, which creates a wonderful working environment. And that has been such a huge impact for me.”

When asked what advice she would provide to a new BOCES staff member, Cheney said to simply listen to the veteran staff members, ask questions, grow with all the changes that come your way daily, keep an open mind, and find some element of fun in each day. As she said, “Humor and laughter are good for the soul.”

“There are so many people that can help. So always ask questions,” she said. “And each year I have been here, I have learned to grow both personally and professionally. Every completed year, I would reflect on it, and ask myself how I could improve on my performance when starting a new year.”

Outside of work, Cheney said she enjoys keeping busy, including spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoys watching her grandchildren at their sporting events and dance recitals, loves the holidays, and creating arts and crafts. She also enjoys the outdoors, vacations to the beach, road trips or just relaxing at the pool.

Throughout her time here at BOCES, she said she has created a lifetime of friendships that she will cherish always.

“I have the best friends, and I am thankful and blessed for all of them,” she said.
