Unleashing Potential In Our Community

College Experience Program (CEP)

12:1:1 College Experience Program

The 12:1:1 college-based program is designed for students working toward a Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) credential or Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential (SACC) who have similar educational and functional needs. This program provides a highly supportive learning environment while emphasizing independence, real-world skill development, and preparation for adult life.

Classes are located on a college campus, Cayuga Community College, offering students authentic opportunities to engage in a post-secondary environment and build skills needed for successful transition to adulthood. Each classroom includes up to 12 students, one certified special education teacher, and one teaching aide, allowing for individualized instruction and consistent support.

Students spend a portion of their day developing daily living, social, vocational, and recreational skills, with a focus on increasing independence and self-advocacy. Instruction is individualized and connected to real-life applications to support success at school, work, and in the community.

Another portion of the day is dedicated to community-based instruction and work-based learning experiences. Students participate in a variety of vocational opportunities while learning to navigate public transportation.

Students enrolled in this program must be able to manage their own behavior, maintain personal safety, and demonstrate a commitment to developing independence and age-appropriate skills in both campus and community settings.

Program highlights include:

  • Instruction aligned to CDOS and SACC credential requirements
  • Emphasis on independent living and functional life skills
  • Community-based vocational and work-based learning experiences
  • Travel training and transportation skill development
  • Access to a college campus environment that supports transition planning

The goal of the program is to empower students with the skills, confidence, and experiences needed to lead meaningful, productive, and as independent a life as possible after high school.
