Itinerant Related Services for the Hard of Hearing

The Teacher for the Hearing Impaired provides direct and indirect academic support for students identified as deaf or hard of hearing. Service is provided in a variety of academic settings, including self-contained classrooms and push-in support within the general education environment. The primary goal is to assist and support students in meeting their IEP goals and objectives.

The scope of services provided includes the following:

                   
  • Provide in-service for professionals who are new to working with the hearing impaired student on the academic and environmental adaptations that could best support the student’s academic success.
  • Consult regularly with the student’s classroom teacher, support staff and parents
  • Provide supplemental materials or suggestions as needed to those working with hearing impaired students.
  • Support continued language development in a variety of subjects.
  • Encourage and model student self-advocacy in seeing that his/her hearing needs are being met across academic settings.
  • Troubleshoot and oversee consistent use of the hearing or sound field equipment.
  • Support sign language development as needed.
  • Provide support and encouragement to transition to post secondary opportunities.
