INSTRUCTIONAL DEVELOPMENT - 508

The Instructional Development Program is a site based staff development service. Districts can target building, team and individual goals in the areas of instructional, management, and team training through the IDP consultant assigned to their district. This service is provided by two instructional development specialists with the depth and the breadth of knowledge in these areas. The specialists visit school sites to provide genuine job embedded opportunities for learning. Districts purchase days of on site service (currently districts purchase from 5-41 days of service) and can use the assigned specialist to conduct mini sessions, workshops, data gathering observations, observations with feedback of instructional strategies, model lessons, planning sessions, problem solving, and facilitation of study groups. All strategies are research based and are correlates of effective schools. Calendar is planned in the spring for the following academic year and districts are provided with a schedule of delivery for all purchased days. Once on site days are purchased, districts have unlimited access to all workshops offered through IDP.

PROFESSIONAL STAFF

The BOCES Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction coordinates the request for collaborative staff development activities between component districts, other BOCES, SED, and community agencies. In this way, districts can access opportunities that can impact the goals of their individual School Improvement Plans as related to acquiring, updating, and maintaining competencies that will impact local results. All requests are subject to the guidelines and approval processes of the School Improvement coser.

ADMINISTRATORS/LEADERSHIP

The work of the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction provides dual impact for staff development initiatives in the component districts. First, the Assistant Superintendent oversees the quality of service delivery provided through the Instructional Development Program, the Planning Office and the Title II D Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant. Additionally, the Assistant Superintendent is responsible for the coordination and alignment between and among all professional development service providers in the BOCES (Teacher Center, SETRC, and ISS) as well as regionally (JMT, Universities, and professional organizations). This alignment is further facilitated as the Assistant Superintendent serves as chairperson for the Curriculum and Staff Development Council of the Cayuga Onondaga BOCES. Secondly, the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction is responsible for providing professional development opportunities uniquely designed for administrators. These activities are designed for the recruitment initiatives of new leaders as well as the new, experienced and veteran administrator assigned to any position. A mentoring service for administrators is available. This job embedded service is provided on site (35 participants annually) to support administrators in their goal oriented effort to lead schools. The Assistant Superintendent attends the monthly regional principal group meetings in a resource capacity. Additionally, workshops are offered regionally as well as upon request by individual districts for local teams.

DATA, CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT

The Data, Curriculum and Assessment Office works directly with the component districts to provide on site staff development in the areas of curriculum development, assessment design and alignment, data analysis, strategic planning, and technical assistance for grant writing. The coordinator is a resource to districts in all of these targeted areas. Seven full days of onsite consultant service is a feature of this service. Work is collaboratively planned to help districts meet building, team, and individual goals. The custom designed services can be delivered through presentation, facilitation, planning sessions, and consultative conferences. The coordinator is also available to answer questions about any of the initiatives from SED as related to curriculum or assessment. Regional scoring is sponsored through this service as well as technical assistance for local scoring initiatives.
