Compass, Day Care Students Team Up for Literacy Festival

Literacy was on display recently at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES as students from the Compass and Day Care programs came together for a reading festival.
Each year, Compass students host a themed literacy event for day care students. The theme of this year’s event was farming, which seemed to engage students both emotionally and educationally.
“This year’s Compass students engaged our UPK students in hands-on, cross curricular activities that allowed students a peak into life on a farm,” said UPK teacher Danielle Fantasia. “This event paired perfectly with the UPK curriculum, as students just wrapped up a unit of study where they learned about the differences between city life and county life.”
During the event, Compass students read stories and led in a variety of farm-themed arts and crafts projects, such as using hula hoops to lasso wooden horses.
Compass Principal Drew Yakawiak said the event is a great way to get Compass students into an environment their comfortable, noting how polite and positive they become around younger students.
“It’s really amazing to watch how their demeanor changes when they’re around the younger children,” said Yakawiak. “They really get into this environment.”
Fantasia said BOCES always strives to create “meaningful experiences” for their students and said this event is one they look forward to each year. Fantasia added that her students are very fortunate for the partnership they have with Compass teacher Crystal Ponto and her students.
