Special Education Showcases New Sensory Room

Thanks to the helping hand of a local organization, the 6:1:1 program at Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES was able to showcase its new sensory room prior to a recent board of education meeting.

The new sensory room features a variety of therapeutic equipment designed to relax and help develop key skills for students with sensory-related problems. Some of the equipment featured in the room includes LED bubble tubes, crash pads, liquid floor tiles, a swing, trampolines and more.

The room was made possible by the generous donation of the Cayuga County Deputy Sheriff’s Benevolent Association (CCSBA). While showcasing the room for the first time, Director of Special Education Susan Lynch thanked the benevolent association for their support and presented them with a plaque.

“We are so thankful for the partnership we have developed with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Department. This relationship has enabled us to provide comprehensive supports to our students on a daily basis,” said Cayuga-Onondaga’s Deputy Superintendent Jessica Docteur. “The Deputy Sheriff’s Benevolent Association’s generous donation to the Sensory Room is just one more example of how this partnership has helped support our students over time.”

“The Sensory Room Showcase highlights the true impact of partnership, collaboration and support,” agreed Superintendent Brian Hartwell. “The Cayuga County Sheriff’s
Benevolent Association’s generosity, coupled with the collaborative efforts of Sue Lynch and our special education professionals, have afforded our students a much needed level of support, by which they can effectively develop and engage their senses.

“Thanks to the CCSBA, the BOCES can provide a therapeutic environment that benefits students.”
