Extended School Year kicks off in July

On July 9, the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Special Education program kicked off its six-week Extended School Year (ESY) program.

Throughout the ESY, students work on individualized goals, participate in fun activities (including use of the playground), visit local sites, and engage in community-based instruction. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy are also provided for students who require these services.

One featured event of the ESY will be a visit from the Auburn Police Department, whose officers will discuss how they work with police dogs as part of their duties. Another high point will be a visit from the Auburn Fire Department, which will talk about fire trucks with the students, before allowing them to explore the truck and see all the great gear used by the firefighters.

Beyond these awesome visits, ESY students will also be afforded the opportunity to listen to live music and engage in physical education. Near the conclusion of these six weeks, ESY will host an open house, where students will put the results of their hard work and creativity on display for everyone in attendance.

Grow, explore, socialize, and learn: that’s the BOCES ESY experience!
