Compass Students and Staff Give Back During the Holidays

students giving back
Each year, individuals from Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES’ Compass Program have the opportunity to give back to the community by participating with the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry. During the holiday season, the pantry provides Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets to more than 450 local families.
Stacking holiday needs on top of the pantry’s usual operation can be a daunting task. So when the pantry’s Director Sue Norton called, Compass Program students and staff stood ready to respond. As many of the pantry’s non-seasonal volunteers are senior citizens, one could practically hear the sigh of relief when students and staff arrived on Nov. 13, 2017, ready to pitch in.
Together, the volunteers unloaded and organized hundreds of pounds of donated food, preparing it for distribution. One week later, Compass Program staff members Elaine Hobart and Colleen Adams returned to the pantry, loaded up a BOCES van, and traveled 85 miles throughout the county, delivering Thanksgiving cheer to a dozen families.
As the holiday season marched onward, so too did the charitable work of the Compass staff. On Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, Elaine and Colleen geared up for a second time in as many months, delivering food baskets to another 13 families located throughout the district.
