Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Hosts Spontaneous Workshop

The Talented and Gifted Advisory (TAG) Committee sponsored a Spontaneous Workshop on Saturday, Dec. 9, held at the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES campus.
This event was open to Odyssey of the Mind teams, and afforded both their members and coaches a firsthand look at the types of challenges issued at the competition. In all, 15 teams attended the workshop, comprised of over 70 students and coaches. Students from the Auburn, Cato-Meridian, Moravia, and Skaneateles school districts joined in the event.
Participants who attended the workshop were challenged to respond to the three different types of "spontaneous problems:" verbal, hands-on, and a third that incorporated elements of both. During official Odyssey of the Mind competition, each team is asked to solve one of these spontaneous problems.
That this part of the competition is called “spontaneous” is no misnomer; teams won’t know what problem they’ll be tasked to solve until they enter the competition room, encouraging students to learn how to “think on their feet.” During competition proper, only five team members are selected to solve the spontaneous problem; but at the workshop, all team members and coaches worked together to tackle challenges issued from prior competitions.
The regional Odyssey of the Mind competition for Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES will be held on Saturday, Mar. 10, 2018.
