Remembering Alex Parkolap: Students in the Criminal Justice program celebrate the life of a friend and classmate

Students in Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES' Criminal Justice program,
joined by Mr. and Mrs. Parkolap, celebrate the life of Alex Parkolap
during a dedication ceremony on May 11, 2017.

On May 11, 2017, seniors in the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES (CO BOCES) Criminal Justice (CJ) program gathered in front of Regional Education Center to dedicate a memorial plaque and tree to their late classmate, Alex Parkolap. Alex attended Jordan-Elbridge High School and was a senior in CO BOCES CJ program. He passed away on Dec. 12, 2016.

Alex’s parents attended the dedication ceremony and witnessed the significant impact their son’s life had on students and staff at BOCES. Short speeches reiterating Alex’s importance were given by Mr. Steve Woodard, director of Career and Technical Education and Al Pola, instructor of the CJ program. Several of Alex’s classmates including Nate Mott, Donnie Tamblin, and Rachel Greene also remembered his spirit and humor by sharing short statements.

To honor Alex and keep his memory alive, the CJ seniors raised money through various fundraising activities to establish the Alex Parkolap Memorial Scholarship, a $150 award given to a deserving BOCES senior. In addition, the class raised money to purchase a plaque in Alex’s memory and secured a donation from Duckett Lawn & Landscaping in Skaneateles of a sunset red maple tree, which was planted outside the CJ classroom.

The class continues to raise money for the scholarship. Anyone who is interested in making a contribution to the scholarship fund can make a check out to Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, write ‘Parkolap Scholarship’ on the memo line, and send it c/o Al Pola, Criminal Justice Instructor, Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES, 1879 West Genesee Street Rd., Auburn, NY 13021.
