Practical Nursing
Introduction
The Practical Nursing Program is an eleven (11) month program with 1200 hours of classroom and clinical instruction combined. The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for the sub-acute and chronically ill clients of all ages. The Practical Nursing Program uses Dorothea Orem’s Theory of Self-care to guide students from a dependent relationship to become independent practitioners.
The New York State Education Department, Division of Professional Education Services approves the practical nursing program. Students who successfully meet program requirements are eligible to sit for the National Council for Nurses Licensure Examination.

Program Requisites
Completion of the application process (see application process)
Applicant must possess either a high school diploma or General Education Diploma.
Students in the practical nursing program must have strong reading and reasoning skills.
Test of Essential Academic Skills is used as a tool to assess an applicant's ability for reading and math.
Remediation for reading and math skills may be availalbe. Apply early to allow time for remediation if necessary.
All students are required to have a physical examination and immunizations must be up to date.
Students accepted into the program must reach age 18 prior to the date of graduation.
Students are required to have CPR for the health care provider prior to entering any clinical agency (October).

Program/Course Description
The program offers 571 hours of theory instruction with the option for remediation on Mondays. Clinical and laboratory experiences make up the remaining 629 hours.
Clinical experiences progress for basic care in Local Nursing Homes to specialty rotations in the Obstetric and Psychiatric units. Additionally, students are given the opportunity to explore other areas of interest in local physicians’ offices and some home care services.
Each unit of instruction is evaluated with written multiple-choice examinations. Students are evaluated daily in the clinical areas. Skills as expected, progress from simple tasks to more complex.
Students who complete the first semester of the nursing and all of the required clinical hours with a passing average will be allowed to sit for the Certified Nurse Assistant examination. The Certified Nurse Assistant examination provides Department of Health certification to practice as a CNA in any nursing home.
Basic Sciences
Anatomy and Physiology
70 hours of classroom instruction

This course provides nursing students with information about the body structures and functions. Students use models and notes to study the body and its functions.
Microbiology
14 hours of classroom and 4 hours laboratory practice

Students learn about the infectious agents and processes and how to prevent the spread of infection.
Nutrition
14 hours of classroom and 4 hours laboratory practice
This course teaches the importance of food both personally for health maintenance and for the treatment of disease.
Fundamental skills of Nursing Practice
60 hours of classroom instruction and 81 hours of clinical/laboratory practice

Growth and Development
28 classroom hours and 60 clinical hours
This course is designed to assist students to gather the knowledge and skills necessary when providing care to clients of varying ages. The clinical experience occurs in nursing homes (Auburn Nursing Home, Finger Lakes Center for Living and Mercy Health and Rehabilitation Center) and other community agencies (E. John Gavras Center, BOCES Day care center).
Phramacology
45 classroom hours and 24 clinical hours

This course provides student with the knowledge and skills related to medication administration. Medication actions are correlated with the diseases and body systems.
Medical Surgical Nursing
204 hours classroom instruction and 300 clinical hours
This course deals with diseases and disorders of the various body systems. It is taught in units according to the body systems. Nutrition, Pharmacology and Pediatric conditions are integrated with this course. Students are required to achieve a 75% in each unit of this course.
Mental Health Nursing
24 hours classroom instruction and 24 hours clinical instruction
This course deals with caring for clients with mental illness and supporting mental health of other clients. Clinical experience is provided in different areas of Auburn Memorial Hospital.
Maternal Newborn Nursing
30 hours classroom instruction and 24 hours clinical instruction

This course teaches students about caring for a client before, during and after a pregnancy. Care of the newborn infant is also covered in this course.
Pediatric Nursing
26 hours classroom instruction and 24 hours clinical instruction

Students learn about conditions of infants & children including medication administration and nursing procedures specifically aimed at children.
State and National Affiliations
At successful completion of the practical nursing program, students are eligible to take the national Council for Licensure Examination. This makes them eligible for licensure in NY State.
The Practical Nursing Faculty actively participates in the New York State Council of Practical Nurse Programs.

2 - Pre-Admission Testing
Test of Essential academic Skills is used to assess applicant's abilities. The test is administered on a computer. The test is administered at the main BOCES Campus at 5980 South STreet Road.

- The test will begin promply at 12:30 PM. Please bring a picture ID with you.
- There will be a brief orientation and question and answer session prior to the testing session.

3 - Scheduling an Interview
When the application files are complete, candidates will be scheduled for interviews. Interviews will be conducted in June 2006.
4 - Acceptance Letters
Letters are mailed approximately two weeks after interviews.
5 - Financial Aid Appointments
Appointments will be scheduled with the financial aid advisor upon acceptance into the program.

Nursing students may be eligible for PELL Grants or Student Loans.
The Cayuga Works Career Center also has scholarships available for qualifying residents of Cayuga County.
Seneca County residents may be eligible for tuition assistance through the Seneca County Workforce Development Agency.

Functional Abilities Essential for Nursing Practice.
Criteria for Admission to and Retention in the Nursing Programs.
A candidate for a nursing degree must possess functional abilities essential for nursing practice. Reasonable accommodations may be made for some disabilities. However, a candidate is expected to perform in a reasonably independent manner.

Academic Policies
Passing grade is 75% for each final examination. A student must achieve a 75% on each exam in order to remain in the practical nuring program.
Attendance Policies
Any student who is absent 10 days (70 hours) of theory instruction will be dismissed from the program.
Any student who is absent 5 days (35 hours) of lcinical instruction will be dismissed from the program.
All clinical absences must be made up. Students will be charged $250.00 per day for each clinical make-up day.
