Certified Nurse Aide/Home Health Aide
Introduction
This program is designed for individuals who are interested in obtaining employment as nurse assistants, home health aides and/or personal care service workers.

Offers a combination of classroom and clinical experience, which will prepare you to become a Certified Nurse Aide/Home Health Aide and to take the New York State Department of Health certification examination.
This course includes 210 hours of instruction:
- 90 hours of clinical experience
- 120 hours of classroom and laboratory experience
Students learn skills in our modern skills laboratory and practice skills using each other and manikins prior to attending clinical.
In the clinical experience the student is assigned to care for one or more residents and provide all of the care that client needs.
Course Requirements
Passing grade is 80% for all units.
Student must demonstrate ability to provide patient care safely at clinical sites.

Deborah Wellington has been employed at the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES since 2000. Debbie is a Registered Nurse and holds Adult Education Certification.

What does a CNA do?
The Nursing assistant provides lots of physical care to clients including:

What are the physical requirements for the CNA/HHA course?
The following requirements are needed before clinical (or you cannot attend clinical):
1 - Persons born prior to January 1, 1957, must have proof of a positive rubella titre.
2 - Persons born after January 1, 1957, must have proof of two MMR's (one must be on or after their first birthday) or proof of a positive rubella titre and one MMR.
3 - TB or Mantoux within the past year (good for one year).
4 - Tetanus within past 10 years (good for 10 years).
5 - Physical with proof within past 6 months (needs to be a thorough physical exam by M.D.).
6 - Need proof of shot records which can be obtained from:
M.D.'s office
School records
College records
Obstetrician's office
* Bring these with you to the Cayuga County Health Department if any further immunizations are needed.
7 - Immunizations available at Cayuga County Health Department are:
MMR (free)
Tetanus (free)
Mantoux ($5.00 fee)
What are the certification requirement?
Certification is required for any person employed in a nursing home as a CNA.
Requirements include:
- Satisfactory completion of an approved program for CNA.
- Successful completion of the certification examination
Cost of exam is included in the tuition for the program
Clinical skills portion is taken in the campus lab with an outside evaluator
Each tester is given 5 skills to complete with the evaluator observing
After successful completion of the clinical skills portion, the written exam is given
This is a multiple-choice examination
Are there any legal requirements for employment at Nursing Homes?
All nursing homes are required to do a criminal background check for direct care employees!
Disqualifying Offenses:
Upon receipt of the CHRC report or Rap Sheet, the nursing home/home care agency operator must review it to determine the applicant's suitability for employment.
If the CHRC reveals a conviction for any of the following offenses, then the operator is PROHIBITED from hiring or utilizing the individual in a direct care or patient supervision capacity.
ANY Class A felony, no time limitation
ANY Class B or C within the last 10 years
The 10 years starts at the time of conviction.
ANY Class D or E felony listed in Article 120, Assault, 130 Sexual offense, Larceny, 1260 Robbery for 10 years
ANY crime defined in Section 260.32 or 260.43 of the Penal Law (endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person) occurring within the 10 years preceding the CHRC report.
ANY comparable offense in any other jurisdiction.
