Skiing Review

 

Size – skis should be no more than 10 inches taller than the person

using them

- poles should be no higher than the armpit of the user

 

Turns – Star turn – many small steps

- 180 turn – pick up ski and turn 180 degrees, then follow

with other ski; use poles for balance

 

Technique – Step and glide, "walk"

- push with legs and poles

- use poles in opposition with legs (natural arm swing

while walking)

 

Cold Weather – dress appropriately: layers not bulk, avoid cotton

if possible

- very important to wear a hat – your body loses

the most heat out the top of your head

- Hypothermia – subnormal body core temperature,

can occur at 50degrees when conditions are right

- Frostbite – freezing of body tissue, re-warm

slowly, do not rub affected area, resembles a burn

- when conditions become dangerous, most

important is to get out of the elements, and stay

or get dry

* if you are wet, you will get cold *

- drink plenty of water while exercising in the cold

– in cold weather people tend to not feel as thirsty
