| The
New Vision Environmental Science Program
provides an opportunity for students to explore many aspects of
environmental science. This program emphasizes the social, economic,
governmental, and political impacts upon the environment.
Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES in cooperation with the Cayuga County Natural
Resource Center will provide an inside look at environmental issues
while conducting field site research projects.
Through mentorship's with environmental professionals, New Visions students will
gain an understanding of various environmental science careers.
Students will acquire knowledge by working on-site with
professionals, handling environmental inspections throughout the
county. Students will conduct environmental impact studies centered
around wetland delineation and land use. Students will view and
participate in policy discussions within governmental agencies which
focus on environmental health issues. As students explore
environmental occupations, they will research post-secondary
training requirements, work components, and career expectations. |
Environmental Science
Components Include:
Field
work at various sites to provide students with actual work
experience in the environmental field; long term monitoring of site
to gather data and observe changes throughout the year; development
of portfolios which will serve as reference for future students;
learning about governmental agencies via speakers, mentors, and
collaborative projects; job shadowing; and mentoring by
environmental professionals. |
The Environmental
Science Program will include nine major areas of study: |
1.
Orientation to Ecosystems Management; developing a historical
perspective of a global environment
2. Forestry; Interconnections within this industry
3. Fish and Wildlife Management; life species within a biodiverse
environment
4. Natural Resources; concepts of soil and water conservation
5. Land and water use administrative planning
6. Technical designs and engineering applications of working
ecosystems
7. Environmental Issues; policy development and governmental
regulation
8. Environmental Health Agencies; governmental resources |
What is a Professional Studies Program?
A
Professional Studies Program is a total immersion approach to
education that integrates English, Government and Career Exploration
into one program of study. The program places high school seniors in
the actual working environment of their preferred career area.
Advantages
New Visions supplements
the final year of high school for talented and motivated students
allowing them to experience a variety of environmental fields. A
portion of the students' morning is spent at their component high
school attending chosen classes. Students then drive to the Cayuga
County Natural Resource Center, 7413 County House Road, in Auburn,
for their New Visions class from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. When
their assignment at the Natural Resource Center is complete,
students return to their home school for academics, athletics, and
other extracurricular activities. |
Students who complete this program will earn a total of three
credits:
English 12
